Day 6 & 7 07/19/2010
Day 6: Saturday was crazy. I had huge plans. And almost accomplished everything that I had planned! You know the old saying "Almost is only good in horseshoes, Hand grenades and biking". Aaron & I left my house at about 8:15. We biked from my house to Sooner Fashion Mall where we met David. Something that I learned. Lindsey street is not friendly to bikers or walkers for that matter. There is no sidewalk on the bridge over I35. 12 inches to your right, you have cars speeding by at 40ish miles an hour. 12 inches to your left, you have a 45 foot fall/cars speeding by at 65ish miles an hour. From the mall the three of us took off. We were headed to a game of Ultimate Frisbee at Andrews park. It was a pretty fun ride. I am sad to say that I didn't make it through the full game of ultimate. About half way through the game, the heat/strain of the pre game 10ish mile bike ride started to get to me. To be precise, I started to get the chills. I am pretty sure that chills are a bad sign in 100 degree weather. Needless to say, I sat out the rest of the game. After the game, we sort of cheated. We wanted to have lunch with everyone, but would have been there after everyone had finished if we biked. So, BethAnn offered to throw our bikes in the bed of her truck. Is that cheating? After lunch, Aaron and I rode to the $1 theater for a quick movie with the parents. Iron man 2 was better than I had expected. My theory is if you go into a movie with super low expectations, that you will rarely be let down. After the movie, I said goodbye to the parents and to Aaron. I rode the short few blocks to Seth's house (I finally made it there on my own!), and played a little jungle ball. If you don't know what it is, then you are missing out on 3.8% of the fun that life has to offer. After that, I biked to campus for a quick dinner with Chris, then I headed home. Over all, it was a great day. Day 7 I had a really hard time getting out of bed.... Ok, so maybe I am not as young as I used to be. My entire body was sore. I don't remember having this problem in the past. Anyway... Sunday Seth gave me a ride to church. After a nice Dijembe session with Chris, I got yet another ride from my parents to Gma's house for lunch. I got home around 5, and rested for a bit. Oh yea, this blog is about biking..... At 6:30 I hopped on the ol bike and headed to my scheduled disc golf game with Seth, Sean and Andrew. Every throw was painful. Yea, my entire body was still sore. After the game I was beat. So I headed home. Total Miles for day 6 Day 5 07/16/2010
Did I cheat? Today after work, I drove to my parent's house. I have to be honest, if I hadn't drove, it would have taken about 6 hours round trip. I think that I had a legitimate excuse. My cousin is in town, and he wanted to join in on my adventures. So, yes I did use my truck, but it was to pick up a cousin and a bike. It was really just a detour on my way home from work. After a short rest, Aaron and I hopped on our bikes and headed out to the softball fields. It was only about 1 mile each way, so not too big of a deal. The big surprise for me is that after a full day of work, a one mile bike ride, and two softball games, I was actually able to ride home. We even stopped for Ice cream! Tomorrow is going to be an even bigger challenge. Total miles for the day: 2 Day 4 07/15/2010
Ok, so today is day 4. I figured it was time to rest. So, no riding today, just resting. I have made a decision, well, more of a challenge really. No more driving cars. Well, I work from 8 to 5 Monday - Friday. I easily could ride my bike to work, and would love to. I am not able to ride to work due to the occasional on site client work that I have to do. I will get random emergency calls and have to drive to Edmond. That would be painful on a bicycle. So, I have gone 4 days without a car (outside of work of course). Lets see how many more I can go. Total Miles for the day: 0 Day 3 07/15/2010
Had a romantic skype date planned with my Fiance at Hastings. About 3.5 miles each way. I made it there, and was very glad to get into the A/C. The ride went well. I decided to make some upgrades to the bike before this one started. I purchased a lock $20 and a headlamp $5. After trying to navigate streets and sidewalks in the dark, I decided it was time to shed some light on things. Total Miles for the day: 7 Day 2 07/15/2010
Biked to McCalasters on Lindsey street. Only about 2 miles each way. The ride felt pretty good. I was incredibly sweaty when I arrived at the restaurant. Sadly enough if I had driven my truck the outcome would have been the same. There hasn't been A/C in that bad boy for years. Total Miles for the day: 4 Days 1 07/15/2010
Day 1 Purchased a Raleigh Talus 4.0. It cost about $470 plus tax plus a kickstand. I decided to see what I could do with it. So, I took off toward Seth's house. I live on the South East corner of Norman, and Seth on the North West. About 5 miles each way. Well, I was really excited on my new adventure, and started off really strong. Actually I started off too strong, and wasted all of my energy. When I was about 2/3rds of the way there, i called Seth and asked him to pick me up. The good news is, after a good rest at Seth's house, I was able to pace myself and make it all of the way back to my house! So, I was able to make it 2/3rds of the way across Norman, and all of the way back! I am excited! Total Miles for the day: 7.6 |
